Pinter’s No Man’s Land
diagrammatic plan

I analysed of the structure of Harold Pinter’s play No Man’s Land to give myself an overview of the shape of the play, I wanted to understand its structure and texture. In the graphic I created, each of the four characters is represented by a coloured vertical stripe. I calculated that each line of text in the script equals three seconds, a pause also equals three seconds and a silence is six seconds. The density of the individual character colour shows what they are doing: the darkest shade means that character is speaking, the mid shade means the character is present but not speaking, the lightest shade represents a stage direction, white equals silence or pause. This allows us to see which characters are on stage at which time, where the monologues and dialogues are, which characters speak most, and so on.

On the right you can see the whole play, below is a close-up of part of the play so you can see the detail of the three-second units.
